What is Herbal Medicine?

Medical herbalism uniquely brings together traditional approaches to health with

the latest research into physiology and medical science. As a medical herbalist I use

whole plant medicine in the form of tinctures, teas, powders, capsules, oils, and creams

to help address clients’ health concerns. Whole plant medicines are unique, as they

contain a wide variety of constituents which work together therapeutically, and our

bodies recognize them in a similar way to how we recognize food. Herbs have unique

abilities to strengthen the body’s own natural healing capacities and provide long-term

support. My practice is individually-focussed: all medicinal preparations, advice, and

exercises are catered to each client’s unique combination of physiological, mental-

emotional, and constitutional concerns. As a holistic practitioner, my ability to spend

up to two hours with clients means that I can help them address the root causes of their

health concerns and delve more deeply into the complexities of their conditions,

including discussions of all body systems, diet and lifestyle, mental-emotional health,

and energetic and constitutional patterns. Herbal medicine can assist in the healing of a

wide variety of medical conditions, both acute and chronic. Herbal medicine has a

particular affinity for long term conditions, as well as illness prevention through

strengthening herbs and constitutional remedies which help bring the body back into

balance.

What to Expect in a Consultation

During an initial consultation, we will discuss your primary health concerns and reasons for your visit, followed by a review of your general health as it pertains to specific body systems, such as digestion, immune system, cardiovascular system, and others. In addition, I will take your vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate, and perform any other necessary physical examinations based on your history. A constitutional assessment is usually included in the consultation, including pulse and tongue readings. Following the session, I will formulate prescriptions (tea, tincture, oil, etc) to address your health concerns. Depending on the circumstances and condition, I will either formulate for you that day, or spend a day or two researching and have you pick it up at another time. We usually recommend returning every couple of weeks for follow ups initially for pressing health matters.
