Elysia Tessler

Medical Herbalist
ABOUT

About Elysia

Elysia is a Medical Herbalist in the Comox Valley, BC (unceded K'omoks territories). She developed a fascination with herbal medicine in 2011, during an 8-month intensive in the urban setting of downtown Vancouver. This fascination, accompanied by a lifelong interest in human behaviour assisted by her background in theatre, led her to study Phytotherapy at Pacific Rim College in Victoria. The training comprised more than 1500 hours in Biomedical Sciences, Materia Medica (herbs),  Therapeutics, and Energetics, plus 500 hours of clinical practice.

Elysia practices an integrative, collaborative and patient-centred approach to health care, and as a result will work along with her client’s physicians and other health providers. She is strongly passionate about complementary or collaborative medicine. It is her intention to work alongside your doctor and other health care providers, to help you find the way to YOUR health in every way possible.  Collaborative medicine to Elysia also means the integration of modern, western medical practice with ancient knowledge and energetics, and she is passionate about the meeting place between these two seemingly opposite worlds.

Though she has seen a wide variety of conditions in her clinical training, Elysia has a particular passion for mental health, trauma, and the relationship between mind and body. She has a personal understanding of mental illness as a life-long sufferer and survivor of anxiety and depression, and it is her goal as a practitioner to create safety and comfort for her patients, to hear their stories without stigma and judgement, and to help them find what makes them feel better.

As a practitioner, Elysia has a strong focus on nourishment-based healing: an emphasis on rest and recovery, as well as dietary and herbal protocols to achieve these goals. It is additionally deeply important to Elysia to ensure her practice is accessible, inclusive and trauma-informed to people of all socio-economic classes, races, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, mental health limitations and neurodivergences.  She additionally provides an optional home visit service to those clients who are unable to travel to her clinic space due to mobility issues, chronic illness, mental health or PTSD.

Elysia has a background in theatre and voice, and is also a certified yoga teacher.  Her training in her early adult life as an actor and yoga teacher has emphasized the importance of body-based approaches in her practice as a Medical Herbalist. "How does that feel in your body?" or "Where do you feel that in your body?" are two questions you will likely hear during consultation in order to choose the appropriate herbs for you and your condition.

Through her extensive training, Elysia has a strong foundation in medical sciences, as well as a passion for various energetic systems, particularly the Western humoral system and Chinese medicine, which she incorporates into her practice; tongue and pulse assessment and other methods of constitutional diagnosis are a strong element of her consultations.
